This article describes the process to add a merge field (such as the matter number or client names) to an existing document template / precedent within LawMaster.
LawMaster offers a Document Automation training course to help you quickly get to know the basics. Please contact your LawMaster Service Delivery Manager for further information about training courses we have available.
Step-by-step guide
To add a field to your document template in LawMaster, follow these steps:
- Start with all Word windows closed. Having other Word documents open might cause you to accidentally edit the wrong document or in some cases can interfere with the process.
- From the LawMaster Main Menu, click Workflow Development > Document Templates. This will display all the available document templates.
- Find the document you would like to change in the grid. TIP: You may need to change the Max Records if you don't see all your templates.
- Right-click on the document and click on the "Edit Document Template" option from the context menu. This will open the template in Word.
- Find the location in your document that the field should be inserted and set your cursor location there, or select any placeholder text that the field will replace.
- Go back to LawMaster, and click Main Menu > Workflow Development > Document Variable Insertion Tool. This will open the Document Variable Insertion Tool in a small floating window.
- Select the template group you want to insert the variable from, using the breadcrumbs (...) or directly entering it. (The template group is associated with the Work Type of the matter the final folio will be merged into - e.g. ZZZZ)
- In the second field of the Document Variable Insertion Tool, use the breadcrumbs button to open the Select Variable window.
NOTE: The third box and the greyed out items are for more advanced use - Use the Data Group drop down to select the type of data you are looking for - matter data in the example.
- Select the variable to insert.
- Click OK on the Select Variable Window.
- Click Insert on the Document Variable Insertion Tool. This should place the merge field into the document.
- Save and close your Word document.
- Back in LawMaster, right click on the template you just added and choose Register Document Template. If you miss this step Word will give you errors when you try to merge
