Wild Cards

When searching, you can use a function in LawMaster called a “Wild Card”.  Wild Cards that can be used are "%" (percentage) and "*" (asterisk) and each has a different purpose which is discussed below.

Example 1 - * Wild Card

You wish to search for a document called “Trust Accounting May 2017”.  You are not sure if the word contained in the title is "Accounting" or "Account".  When conducting your search you enter Accou* which will return folios and documents that have 'Accou' as part of the larger word, so in this case searching on Accou* will return Accounting.   Note the asterisk is at the end of the partial word you are searching.

If you were to search on Esc*, the system will return items similar to “Escape”, “escalation” etc.

Same search without the asterisk.

No data returned:

Example 2 - % Wild Card

When using the % wild card, you need to use a full word to search on, in this case Account or Accounting.  LawMaster will then search anywhere for this word in the description of the folio narrowing it down to a reasonable number of documents that are similar.   You cannot use partial words as in Example 1.

When searching within a folio screen without the percentage, you will receive the same results as if you were searching on a full word.

Use of % wild card when searching for a general ledger account within a General Ledger enquiry.  Searching for any general ledger accounts that contain the word stationery:

Will return the following data:

Without the percentage in your search:

Will return the following data where it will only return any general ledger accounts that commence with the word stationery.

Note: In these example the system is searching the text of the Folio record, by selecting “Search within Documents” the system will also search the attachments associated with the folio therefore, you will receive a larger amount of folios.
