Add a new document template

Modified on Wed, 21 Feb at 1:39 AM

Simple template documents without without any merge fields (variables) can be easily added to LawMaster via Workflow Development.

If you would like to add merge fields to your documents, such as client names, address details and matter attributes, there are further steps involved.

You can find out more by looking in the LawMaster in-product help and navigating to the Other Modules > Workflow Development > Preparing Documents section.

LawMaster also offers a Document Automation training course to help you quickly get to know the basics. Please contact your LawMaster Service Delivery Manager for further information about training courses we have available.

Step-by-step guide

  1. Create the Word document and name (e.g. zztest.docx).
  2. Save it to your desktop
  3. In LawMaster go to Main Menu > Workflow Development > Document Templates

  4. Right click anywhere on the grid and select Add

  5. In the Add Document Template window:
    1. Give the template a name. This is usually a short code name of the document, similar to a file name. Make sure the name of the template includes the file extension of the document. E.g. zztest.docx. The document will not work if you do not include the correct extension.

    2. Give the template an understandable description, e.g. Test Document
    3. In the “Document Type” box choose “WD”
NOTE: If you want to add LawMaster merge fields to the document then in the “Document Type” box choose “LM” instead.

    4. In the “Group” lookup, specify where the template will sit in the Template tree menu eg) Z1 Correspondence All other fields are optional
  6. Click OK.
NOTE: If you set the Document Type box in step 8 to LM then right click on the template in the grid and select Register Template. This step is not necessary if you selected the WD Document Type.
