Introduction
In LawMaster, Floating File Notes can be used to record the information and add as a file note. If you have a matter open and displaying in the Matter Workbench, LawMaster provides a window for recording file notes on the current matter when the user is using, MS-Word or other software concurrently.
The window (as shown below) is brought into view by clicking on the icon on the Lawyer's Toolbar.
- The On Top check box on the Floating File Note window indicates whether the dialog box stays on top of the underlying application.
- When in Tabbed Mode, care should be taken in the operation of the Floating File Note to save a document to a relocated Matter, i. e. a matter which is no longer in the LawMaster main screen. Clicking the Floating File Note icon on the LawMaster main screen will bring any open matter in that screen into focus and the Floating File Note will default to that matter. We suggest that you only use the Floating File Note to save a document to a matter which is in the LawMaster main screen
Supported Functions
The Floating File Notes feature allows you to perform the following:

- Under the File Note input box on Matter Workbench, enter the file note.
- Click on the Floating icon on the Lawyer's toolbar.
- Click the copy content icon to paste the file note to the Floating File Note window.
- Type the File Note content.
- Open the matter that you wish to save it to (it will always save to the active matter).
- Click the clipboard icon which will paste the file note onto the active matter.
- On the current Matter Workbench, you will see the content you copied into the File Note section.

- Click on the Floating icon on the Lawyer's toolbar.
- Click the down arrow after the Save field.
- This opens a list of file types that you can save on the active matter.
- A dialogue box will appear.
- You can click OK without having entered any additional data to the dialogue box. It is, however; very useful to enter the information so that you can easily find and / or sort the folio later. The “Original Folio” box is ticked if the file is considered and original file for the matter that it is being added to. Once you click OK, the source document will close. It will save into a temporary file folder. From there, it saves it to Document Management Server (DMS) and it will be available in LawMaster attached to a matter. If you want to edit the document, you are best to open it out of LawMaster.
